When a severe bleed happens, the priority is to stop the loss of blood quickly using simple, effective steps: apply direct pressure over the wound with a clean material to compress the vessels and help form a clot; place a sterile dressing over the wound so you can press on a clean surface and prevent contamination; and, if possible, elevate the injured limb to reduce blood flow to the area.
